How should I store hostas during the winter?

We are going to be moving at some point this winter and I have some hostas in my yard that I would like to take with me. I want to dig them up now before the ground freezes, how would I store them for the winter?

You can put them in dirt in pots and move them that way, or you can store them in a box with some saw dust around them and replant them early in spring as soon as the ground can be worked.

Put them in pots, but don’t let the pots freeze. This would damage the roots.
