NEW YORK (YouTube.com/AdAge) — Social media is playing a major role in accelerating the decision cycle of consumers who patronize ski resorts. As a result, one of the country’s largest such companies — Vail Resorts — has abandoned its long-time advertising strategies and practices. In their place, the billion-dollar-a-year corporation, which operates five major resorts and twenty hotels, has built a new in-house marketing operation that uses social media and other digital venues to constantly engage skiing enthusiasts in real time. CEO Rob Katz explains the dramatic changes.

History of Breckenridge’s Mercury SuperChair:
The Mercury SuperChair was built by Poma (now Leitner-Poma of America) in 1997 as a replacement for the aging Lift B. Before the Beaver Run SuperChair was built in 1990, Peak 9 had five lettered lifts: Lift A (triple chairlift), and B, C, D and E (all double chairlifts), all of which were Riblet built. Of course, they all went to different heights on the mountain. Today, only Lifts A, C, and E of those five survive. The fates of Lifts B and D, you probably know…
In 1990, Lift D was removed and replaced by the Beaver Run SuperChair. Actually, it wasn’t fully removed. If you look to your right while riding the Beaver Run SuperChair after crossing under the Peak 8 SuperConnect, you’ll see the Ski Patrol Evacuation area, which uses some of Lift D’s parts.
Lift B would be replaced by the Mercury SuperChair* in 1997. The lift was actually one of two lifts built that year, the other being the Rocky Mountain SuperChair on Peak 8. Unlike the Rocky Mountain SuperChair, the Mercury SuperChair was built to replace a previous lift. Lift B partially survives. The upper terminal house survives as the Peak 9 Patrol Hut and the lift line is intact between the top of the lift and the Quicksilver Quad terminal.
If you look closely, Tower 18 on the Mercury SuperChair seems designed such that the lift can cross over a ghost lift. This suggests that Lift B was still intact when the Mercury SuperChair was installed in 1997.
Stats:
Opened in 1997
Replaced Lift B
20 towers
154 chairs
Omega chairs
Challenger terminals
TB-41 detachable grips
*The Beaver Run SuperChair was known under this name from 1990 to 1993.
