Social Media Upends Ski Resort Marketing

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

NEW YORK (YouTube.com/AdAge) — Social media is playing a major role in accelerating the decision cycle of consumers who patronize ski resorts. As a result, one of the country’s largest such companies — Vail Resorts — has abandoned its long-time advertising strategies and practices. In their place, the billion-dollar-a-year corporation, which operates five major resorts and twenty hotels, has built a new in-house marketing operation that uses social media and other digital venues to constantly engage skiing enthusiasts in real time. CEO Rob Katz explains the dramatic changes.

Telluride Ski Resort Terrain Park Grooming with Chris Meyer and the Park Bully Snow Cat

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

WATCH IN HQ!
Chris Meyer late in the 2009 season grooming some wet snow in the Hoot Brown Terrain Park with the Mercedes Park Bully. Grooming conditions were far from ideal. The snow is really wet and it was hard to get a good pass because of the warm weather. This is the only footage like this on Youtube and this is a rare glimpse at how terrain parks are created. This Snow Cat cost over 250K and is powered by a Mercedes Twin Turbo 7.2 Liter Inline 6 Cylinder engine which is custom designed to run hydraulic pumps. This Cat has 6 pumps total which power the driving track, tiller and blade. This is one of the most complex pieces of machinery in the Telluride Valley. The computer system which runs it is state of the art. The Mercedes Park Bully is amazing.

Ski Area Report Card

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

For 10 years, the Ski Area Citizens Coalition has published its ski area environmental report card, a rating system that grades ski resports across the west according to their impact on the natural environment.

Paul Joyce, a conservation assoicate at the environmental protection group Colorado Wild, says a ski resorts grade depends on how well it plays in its own backyard.
When a ski area expands into the back country, expands into habitat, affects wildlife, affects vegetation, thereby affecting water, watersheds, water quality, Joyce said, those things weigh really heavy with the report card.

Resorts owned by the Aspen Skiing Company dominate the highest rated resorts in the west.
People listen to us in part because were an interesting news story, but also because were business people., Auden Schendler, environmental affairs director at Aspen Skiing. Ultimately were not environmentalists. Were business people. And we see climate changes as an existential threat to business.
In this edition of This American Land we explore ski resorts that employ environmentally sustainable practices to protect natural areas that surround their slopes.
