A great Interview of Richard Burton in 1973. He just came out from the Hospital and is quite nervous. What a voice, he died too young.

lol, 3:01 “it’s the …
lol, 3:01 “it’s the deep, dark answer from the valleys to everybody,” and his adorable smile after he gets a laugh from the audience. this man, is all kinds of amazing. and honest. you’ll never hear an actor talk so candidly in my era. i’m 20. but im glad to be this age in the 21st c., what with the technology that makes this available to me whenever the i want to see it. but I’d like to time machine back for a spell to drink with him Peter O’Toole and Richard Harris, circa 1964 maybe

@JuanMacready my …
@JuanMacready my first question would be, “Why are you here?”. You seemed to have formed your opinion long ago. I have this crazy thing i do. As strange as it sounds, I, oh i don’t know watch things i am quite certain I will like. If you think his performances in Beckett or Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf are that of a ham you need to reavaluate your criterion on what makes a great performance and hence a great actor.

Richard Burton was …
Richard Burton was an excellent actor, I have warched some interviews and really he was a very intelligent and interesting man

He was a wooden …
He was a wooden film actor and an overacting ham. Just see how terrible he was as Henry VIII in that awful overlong flop. He was an awful actor from his leaden performance in The Robe. No wonder Brando hated the racist.

@JuanMacready where …
@JuanMacready where did u learn he copied olivier? maybe influenced by olivier as no one can copy someone 100 percent. why are you glad he’s dead? i see you are only 16. are you aware of how famous, popular and resepected he was as an actor when he was alive? I am 42 and i was about 15/16 when he died and remember it. i don’t recall ever reading about him being considered a bad actor. maybe doing a bad movie or role or bad job in a particular role. but then in his next role he would be praised.

@JuanMacready who …
@JuanMacready who criticised him? where did you learn this? Throughout his career he had successes where he was praised and failures, like all actors. doesn’t mean he was a bad actor or talentless. from what i know and have read he was also equally praised for his acting; maybe more so. Are you just reading the bad reviews and thinking the critcs hated him? that’s like seeing a couple arguing and thinking they hate each other.

He was criticised …
He was criticised throughout his “career” for overacting and being a ham. In any case he only copied Olivier in everything. I’m glad he died at only 58.

@JuanMacready i …
@JuanMacready i checked the wikipedia article on him. it says (with references) that throughout his career he won praise from critics, the public and his colleagues for his acting. are you referring just to the 1964 hamlet?

He didn’t get …
He didn’t get favourable reviews, and the critics didn’t like him at all. I’ve no idea why anyone liked the talentless racist loser. I wish Burton had got cancer of the larynx and ended up talking through a hole in his throat like Jackl Hawkins.
July 5th, 2010 at 8:40 am
@JuanMacready have …
@JuanMacready have you been angry at him for 46 years?! Wow. So if it was so awful why did he get favourable reviews?s And if he was a bad actor why did the critics like him and the general public? For your opinion to be true he would have had to fool a lot of people into thinking he was talented? What are the chances? Like all situations involving sex (gay or straight) it will only get your foot in the door. You still need hard work, perseverence, luck…and… TALENT to take it further.

Burton was just a …
Burton was just a vocal communist living as a tax exile in Switzerland.

you don’t often …
you don’t often hear british people talking about being proud of their race these days, do you. some even deny their ethnicity, such as being welsh, or english, for fear of offending non-ethnic british racial groups who live in britain, such as blacks and asians. very sad. but then again, modern brits don’t really deserve to be called british the way burton and other generations of brits do. modern brits are little more than “white americanized trash.” long live the true brits.

The cigarettes caused his death.

Ah the old days …
Ah the old days when one could light up a gig while been interviewed. It’s also strange because Parkinson says the interview took place in the morning, before the pubs opened. However in spite of this Burton still made the effort to come dressed smartly in a suit while Parkinson dressed like he just got out of bed. I really can’t see the reason why Parkinson couldn’t have made a effort -well if a man just out of hospital can then why not him.

@JuanMacready Depends what you see them in, really. O’Toole was very good in Venus.

No it was his awful …
No it was his awful hammy overacting actually. Not surprised he didn’t want it released. Burton only copied Olivier anyway.

@JuanMacready …
@JuanMacready Maybe you couldn’t understand it.

Yes I saw Burton’s stage version of Hamlet and it was AWFUL.
July 5th, 2010 at 8:40 am
@JuanMacready you …
@JuanMacready you obviously never saw either one of them live on stage. I have seen both. Overacting doesn’t enter the deion. Then again, I’m sure you are used to greats like Matt Damon and Adam Sandler.

thanks so much for posting this historic interview. What an amazing actor this man was. The greats are truly gone – with the exception of Peter O’Toole. Parkinson did some great interviews and we never saw them in the states until YouTube!
